Cardiff Arms Park were delighted with the result when their new artificial pitch was laid in 2013. Chief executive, Richard Holland said ‘It’s just incredible. It’s a softer surface than most park pitches are at this time of year. Having seen it every day and watched the project develop, it has been a remarkable transformation.”
Work had to be completed within a very demanding timeframe, and with very limited access while the stadium prepared for and staged a Beyonce concert. The pitch had to be specifically constructed for hard contact. Dual fibre filaments were chosen because of their composition. Mono-filament fibre, designed to stand vertically with the second fibrillating fibre, designed to fall over flat trapping the rubber and greatly reducing ‘rubber splash’, which is particularly important for rugby surfaces. The ground breaking decision to install a synthetic artificial grass pitch at such an auspicious venue was not taken lightly. But the benefits speak for themselves. Games now go ahead regardless of weather conditions and the surface enables players to focus on their game while sustaining fewer injuries. ‘TPS and their highly-motivated team impressed us throughout the process with their professional attitude and expertise. We were delighted with the quality control throughout the installation, as construction was continually tested, work progressed and results fed back to us. TPS more than met our expectations with the finished product. The iconic ground was proud to support the Dragon’s Heart Nightingale Hospital during the pandemic. And when serious damage was revealed on the existing 3G pitch, when the covers, which had been in place for five months were finally removed. Tony Patterson Sportsgrounds were reappointed without hesitation to replace the surface.
When choosing a surface we felt it was important to not only look at value for money but to find a partner that we trusted. Tony Patterson’s laid our original artificial surface and we have been impressed by the performance and durability for both the professional and community game. If it wasn’t for the unprecedented situation of supporting the Dragons Heart COVID19 surge hospital we’re confident we had a good few years left of playing on the surface. We’re delighted with the replacement surface and confident it will not only allow Cardiff Rugby to play an expansive exciting style of professional rugby but also serve the local community for many years to come. We cant wait for our supporters and community clubs to come and see the amazing surface for themselves.
